Need a break, but can't afford to travel?
Don't worry, I've got you covered!
Following up on my post on destressing after work - and still not a stinking rich Hollywood goddess with a butler at my disposal -, here are my top ten destressing techniques for when you need a break, but can't afford an out-of-town vacation.
The great thing about a staycation is that it doesn't require much planning! Heading to an unknown country, an unexplored city requires a lot of planning ahead if you want to make the most of your stay.
But it doesn't take much to unwind in your own home! You've got all you need right in front of you. The trick is not to let it trap you in your everyday routine.
1. Shut off. By which I mean all of your technological devices. For an entire day. At least. Truly take some time off - away from emails and texts and buzzing and ringing. For once, don't be at everyone's beck and call. Enjoy the quiet and being in control of your own time. Plus, I'm not sure what that cell phone radiation can really do to us. Maybe humans will evolve into oddly shaped super-beings someday. Or deformed aliens. Either way, I don't trust these bad boys and locking them away for a day or two can hardly be a bad thing.
2. Exercise. Get your bike out of the dusty cellar and go for a ride. Explore the lesser known parts of the city or head towards the nearest forest or park. Stop to pick flowers or make nature mandalas. Exercising outdoors is the best as you get a healthy dose of fresh air and can enjoy your natural surroundings.
3. Breathe. Sounds lame, I know. But we hardly really take the time to take care of own bodies anymore, to be mindful of our Selves, to be consciously. I mean, staring at screens all day, we don't even blink as often as we actually need to; think about that for a moment! So put on some relaxing music. There are plenty of soothing melodies out there, calming sounds or meditation apps if that's your thing. Close your eyes, relax your muscles and just breathe. A perfect exercise for when you're lying down also.
4. Shop at a farmer's market. Oh the colors, the flavors! Go for a stroll, get some truly fresh fruit, pick up some gourmet foods, spices and a fresh loaf of bread. I mean, if the delicious scents aren't enough to reel you in anyways, I'm not sure I can help you. Sure, this isn't India, but I mean, we can pretend can't we?
5. Write. We might not all be the next Shakespeare - because let's face it, I've already taken that spot - but, we all have something to say, things going on in our minds, thoughts or feelings we'd like to convey, but don't quite know how to. I am not asking you to start a diary, but just take the time to express yourself. Simply put your thoughts and memories to paper - no eloquence required. It is the perfect way to reflect and get a grasp of what is already going on in your mind. Or, be a little more creative, and write a short story. Challenge yourself and let your imagination go wild!
6. Have a picnic. Pack a basket with all your favorite edible goodies, a blanket, and head outdoors. As you lay there - munching away - watch the clouds go by. Try to identify fun shapes - a classic outdoor activity! Don't leave until you haven't found a llama, an umbrella, a bottle opener, a pair of mittens, and Beyonce. Easy peasy if you ask me...
7. Surprise visit a friend. Is there someone you haven't seen or spoken to in a while? Perhaps a friend or family member who doesn't mind you wandering in unannounced - as long as you have a bottle of wine on you? I'm sure he/she has a spare glass somewhere, so get going and have a spontaneously good time!
8. Go for a swim. As long as the weather still permits it, be brave and dive into the nearest lake. Or at least dip your feet into the cold water. Talk about refreshment! A swimming pool will do also though. Swimming is one of my top recommended activities that have a guaranteed fun factor and keep us exercised at the same time! Don't forget your swimming noodle! Seriously though, can someone explain to me what those are even for?
9. Treat yourself. I'm sure there are plenty of people who would disapprove, but I've never heard of an occasional chocolate bar or pack of chips doing any harm! Snacking is ok. I not necessary. For your mental health. Nough said.
Fine. If you want to cut back on the calories, treat yourself to a new pair of shoes or earrings. Put yourself first for moment, and get something you can truly enjoy.
10. Sleep outdoors. Why spoil yourself only in bright daylight? Spend the night out on the balcony with a cup of... tea? coffee? bourbon? You decide really. Enjoy the crisp air, watch the stars. How many stellar constellations can you identify? Everyone keeps telling me they can identify the Big Dipper. Or the little one, I don't know. But let me tell you, I don't see anything up there but a big black nothing with pimples!... but maybe you'll have better luck. It is starting to get a little chilly though, so don't forget to bring a blanket! Have a hammock even? - Then nothing can stand in the way of a cozy night in/out.
